You don’t have to put in stitch markers, but it’s helpful because if you don’t you have to count the stitches. (Which, I personally prefer.) I never use stitch markers like that, but markers work fine because then you don’t have to concentrate as much.
No, I dont use them, just decrease by counting down each time. For example, an adult hat (with 70 stitches) I first decrease every 9 stitches (knit a couple of normal rows) then decrease every 8 stitches (knit a couple of normal rows (then decrease every 7, 6 5 etc

haha I did my swatch and got 4 stiches per inch and my head was exactly 21 inches wide! Wow, that’s weird! lol
